He was also a member of the 1846 Iowa Constitutional Convention. Early lifeSocrates Tryon was born on January 24, 1816, Pawlet Township, Vermont, to Laura Hotchkiss and Jesse Tryon.[2][3] The younger Tryon was educated at Castleton Medical College in Rutland County, graduating in the Spring of 1836.[4][5] His grandfather, Socrates Hotchkiss, was also a physician in Vermont.[2] Socrates Tryon later moved to the Iowa Territory where he lived in Linn County and served as the clerk for the United States District Court in 1840.[6] The territorial governor had appointed him as sheriff of the county in January 1839, but Tryon declined the position.[7] Tyron represented Linn and Benton counties at Iowa's Second Constitutional Convention held in May 1846, which led to the admission of Iowa into the Union in December of that year.[8] Tyron then moved to California with his wife, Frances (née Safley), and son, Socrates Hotchkiss Tryon Jr., before moving north to the Oregon Territory. There he was one of the first physicians in Oregon, settling a donation land claim in 1850 near what later became the city of Lake Oswego.[2] OregonLegacyFor nearly 25 years, the company cut virgin cedar and fir on the old Tryon homestead to use in its foundry in Lake Oswego.[9] More logging occurred from 1912 until 1961, and in 1969 Multnomah County bought part of the old property to use as a park.[26] More land was added and a state park was created in 1970, later changed to Tryon Creek State Natural Area.[26] Tryon Creek, which flows through Tryon Creek State Natural Area and the former Tryon property to join the Willamette River near Lake Oswego, was named for Tryon.[13] The Oregon Iron Company's logging road later became Old Iron Mountain Trail in the state natural area.[14] References1. ^{{cite web | work = Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) | publisher = United States Geological Survey | date = November 28, 1980 | url ={{Gnis3|1123369}} | title = Lone Fir Cemetery | accessdate = June 17, 2009}} 2. ^1 {{cite book|last=Paul|first=Hiland|author2=Robert Parks |title=History of Wells, Vermont, for the First Century After Its Settlement|publisher=Tuttle & Co., Job Printers|year=1869|page=105|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=7p5Y3JpbUloC&pg=PA105&dq=Socrates+Tryon+vermont&lr=&as_brr=1#PPA105,M1| accessdate = June 16, 2009}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/TRYON/1998-06/0897414443|title=Tryon-L Archives|last=Brevik|first=Dennis J.|date=June 9, 1998|work=Part 2A|publisher=Rootsweb|accessdate=June 17, 2009}} 4. ^{{cite book|last=Hollister|first=Hiel|title=Pawlet for One Hundred Years|publisher=J.
