PlotThe film Soleil Ô, shot over four years with a very low budget, tells the story of a black immigrant who makes his way to Paris in search of “his Gaul ancestors”. This filmic manifesto denounces a new form of slavery: The immigrants desperately seek work and a place to live, but find themselves face to face with indifference, rejection, and humiliation, before heeding the final call for uprising. “Soleil Ô” is the title of a West Indian song that tells of the pain of the black people from Dahomey (now Benin) who were taken to the Caribbean as slaves. Cast
ReceptionThe film played during the International Critics' Week at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival where it received critical acclaim.[4] It received a Golden Leopard award at the 1970 Locarno International Film Festival.[5] In his Family Guide to Movies on Video, Henry Herx wrote that the film's "use of ironic humor and lively music keeps the plight of the black emigrant worker from becoming totally depressing."[6] References1. ^{{cite web | title = Soleil O > Production credits | publisher = AllMovie | url = http://www.allmovie.com/work/soleil-o-139889/credits | accessdate =2009-08-26 }} {{RefFCAT|494}}2. ^{{Cite news | last = Reid | first = Mark | author-link = | last2 = Blum | first2 = Sylvie | author2-link = | title = Med Hondo, interview Working abroad |newspaper = Jump Cut | pages = | year = | date = 1986-03-31 | url = http://www.ejumpcut.org/archive/onlinessays/JC31folder/Hondoint.html | accessdate =2009-08-24 | postscript = }} 3. ^{{cite web | title = Soleil O > Cast | publisher = AllMovie | url = http://www.allmovie.com/work/soleil-o-139889/credits | accessdate =2009-08-26 }} 4. ^{{cite web | last = | first = | authorlink = | title = Directors in Focus — African Perspectives: Med Hondo | work = | publisher = Harvard Film Archive | year = 2006 | url = http://hcl.harvard.edu/hfa/films/2000marapr/hondo.html | doi = | accessdate =2009-08-24 }} 5. ^{{cite web | last = | first = | authorlink = | coauthors = | title = Winners of the Golden Leopard | work = | publisher = Locarno International Film Festival Official Site | date = | url = http://www.pardo.ch/jahia/Jahia/home/Festival/History/Winners-of-the-Golden-Leopard/cache/offonce/lang/en%3Bjsessionid=96CE916F604908C3BBCDEBF3316B1911 | format = | doi = | accessdate =2009-08-26 }} 6. ^{{cite book|last=Herx|first=Henry|authorlink=Henry Herx|title=The Family Guide to Movies on Video|chapter=Soleil-O|page=249 (pre-release version)|isbn=0-8245-0816-5|year=1988|publisher=The Crossroad Publishing Company}} External links
