Together with Cusworth it forms the civil parish of Sprotbrough and Cusworth (sometimes Sprotbrough with Cusworth). It starts at the junction of the A638, and the "Old Great North road " A19, and continues all the way to High Melton. People sometimes mistake the small farm and area of Newton to be where Sprotborough to starts, but this isn't the case. Cusworth is nearby and Cusworth Hall can be found there. The place-name 'Sprotbrough' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Sproteburg. The name is thought to mean 'Sprot's borough'.[1] See also
