It is located in Ludlow, Massachusetts, adjacent to Westover Joint Air Reserve Base. Between 1954 and 1962 Stony Brook AFS was an Operational Storage Site for Air Materiel Command (AMC-OSS), one of five in the United States, and the nuclear weapons storage and maintenance facility for Westover Air Force Base alert aircraft. In July 1962 it was transferred to the operational control of the Strategic Air Command (SAC).
