It was constructed for hydroelectric power production and flood control. The dam was completed in 1978 and all generators were operational by 1979. In 1977, the first use of roller compacted concrete in Brazilian dam construction occurred on the São Simão.[1] SpecificationsThe dam is {{Convert|3600|m}} long and {{Convert|127|m}} high embankment dam with concrete spillway and power plant sections. ReservoirThe dam's reservoir has a surface area of {{Convert|703|km2}} and a capacity of {{Convert|12.5|km3|acre.ft}} of which {{Convert|5.54|km3|acre.ft}} is live.
