CareerHe played hurling with his local club Rathnure and with the Wexford senior inter-county team in the 1970s and early 1980s.[1] Coaching careerHe retired from playing and became a manager due to a shoulder injury received during practice for the 1979 Wexford county title. Physiotherapy and medical treatments were unsuccessful, and Rathnure asked him to coach the minor and juvenile teams in 1981. Both teams won titles in his first season as coach.[1] While coaching Rathnure, Murphy also worked as a construction worker for Dublin company Collen Construction.[1][4] Murphy was the coach for the Wexford under-21 team when they won titles in 2001 and 2002.[5] He had hoped to become manager of the senior Wexford team in 2001 when Tony Dempsey stepped down, but he was not considered for the post.[2] By the end of 2004, he had won 77 titles at different level of hurling.[3] He became senior hurling manager for Wexford at the end of 2004, replacing John Conran, who he had played with at Rathnure.[4] He also managed Wexford's Intermediate hurlers, who won the All-Ireland title in September 2005, the first time Wexford had won since 1964.[5] He was reappointed for the 2006 season,[6] but decided to retire before the 2007 season after a 25-year hurling career.[5] Personal lifeMurphy is an amateur musician, playing guitar and accordion.[2] He is married with two children.[1] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite news|url=http://www.tribune.ie/archive/article/2006/jun/11/building-for-the-present/|title=Building for the present|last=McEvoy|first=Enda|date=11 June 2006|work=Tribune|accessdate=5 December 2010|location=Ireland}}{{Dead link|date=June 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=no }} {{s-start}}{{s-sports}}{{succession box|title=Wexford Senior Hurling Manager|before=John Conran |after=John Meyler|years=2004-2006}}{{succession box|title=Wicklow Senior Hurling Manager|before=Martin Storey |after=Éamonn Scallan|years=2016-2018}}{{s-end}}{{Rathnure Hurling Team 1974}}{{Rathnure Hurling Team 1978}}{{Wexford hurling team managers}}{{Wicklow hurling team managers}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Murphy, Seamus}}{{Wexford-hurling-bio-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/article539896.ece|title=Gaelic Games: Journey man|last=Walsh|first=Denis|date=3 July 2005|work=Sunday Times|accessdate=5 December 2010}} 3. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.thefreelibrary.com/GAA%3A+SEAMUS+CALLS+ON+MODEL+FANS+TO+BE+REALISTIC%3B+Murphy+says+NHL+is...-a0125462508|title=GAA: Seamus calls on Model fans to be realistic; Murphy says NHL is key concern.|last=Cahill|first=Jackie|date=30 November 2004|work=The Mirror|accessdate=5 December 2010|location=London}} 4. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.rte.ie/sport/2004/1127/wexford.html|title=Murphy takes over in Wexford|date=27 November 2004|work=RTÉ Sport|accessdate=5 December 2010}} 5. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.rte.ie/sport/2005/1217/wexford.html|title=Murphy to quit Wexford next year|date=17 December 2005|work=RTÉ Sport|accessdate=5 December 2010}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.rte.ie/sport/2005/1126/wexford.html|title=Murphy will continue as Wexford manager|date=26 November 2005|work=RTÉ Sport|accessdate=5 December 2010}} 5 : 1950 births|Living people|Rathnure hurlers|Wexford inter-county hurlers|Hurling managers |
