{{refimprove|date=December 2010}}Thangal is the term which is being used to call the male descendants of Prophet Muhammad in Kerala and Lakshadweep. The female descendants are being called 'beevi'.Thangals and beevis are denoted 'Ahlu baith' by the Qur'an. The Arabic term 'Sayyid' and 'Sayyidath' are universally used by Muslims to denote them respectfully..

In Malayalam, thangal is an honorific Muslim title almost equivalent to the Arabic term Sayyid ({{lang-ar|سيد}}) which is given to males believed as descendants of Islamic prophet Muhammad through his grandsons, Hasan ibn Ali and Husayn ibn Ali, who were the sons of his daughter Fatima Zahra and son-in-law Ali ibn Abi Talib. It has two basic divisions called Ba-Hassan and Ba-Alawi.Shatiri(shattari) residing at vaduthala,alleppy district' Al Aidrosi,Al Hadi, Al mattari, Al-Jamallulaily(BaJamalullayl), Mashhoor[1], Shihab, Al-Jifri, Al-Fakhi(Bafakhy), Al-Saqqaf(BaSaggaf), Al-Bukhari, Al-Haboothy(BaHabooth) are considered as important Sayyid families (Qhabeelas). Thangals residing in Panakkad, Malappuram district are often regarded as the most powerful and influential Thangals of Kerala. The Thangal of Panakkad is the supreme leader of the Sunni believers of Muslims of Kerala and hence plays an important role in local politics. The famous Sayyid ancestry Mashhoor is another well known thangals Qabeela residing in Vadakara, Kozhikode district. Mashhoor Qabeela of vadakara is famous in sufi Tariqa which is the spiritual path of Islam,

Origins

As per religious documents, the Muslim descendants of Hashim and Muthalib, the paternal grand fathers of Prophet Muhammad is considered as the family of Prophet. The family tree branched through Fathima-Ali Couples and their sons Hassan and Hussain. The family from Makka to Madeena then scattered all over the world. Thangals or Sayyids are not allowed to receive 'Zakath', the compulsory donations even though one among the thangals belongs to the very poor and treated respectfully by every muslims

Thangals are migrated from Makkah to Madina, then to Bukhara. From Bukhara they migrated to different parts of the world including Hadharmouth(Yemen).

The first sayyid family who reached in kerala was al bukhari qabeela. They migrated to Kerala directly from Yemen before 800 years. For 400 years then there were no other sayyid khabeela in kerala. Late sayyid abdurrahman al bukhari kunjikkoya thangal(ullal thangal) and sayyid Khaleelul Bukhari thangal Kadalundy, Chairman of Ma'adin Academy, are belong to bukhari qabeela.

The family of sayyid Muhammedali shihab thangal came to Kerala from Yemen 400 years after the arrival of Bukhari family.

Mashhoor Qabeela, one of the most famous prophetic families of Malabar started in Kerala with the coming of Sheikh Sayyid Abdurahman Mashhoor to Vatakara in 1710 C.E from Hadhramaut of Yemen. He was the nephew of the great sufi saint Sayyid Cheruseethi Thangal who is laid to rest at Thayangadi Makkham, Vadakara, Kozhikode district.The great Sufi scholar and spiritual master Sheikh Sayyid Muhammed Mashhoor Mullakoya Thangal. and Sheikh Sayyid Abdullah Mashhoor Kunhikoya Thangal are descendants of Sayyid Cheruseeti Thangal (1669 - 1771).

The Al-Bukhari family in Kerala is migrated from Bukhara in the former USSR. This family started with the arrival of a scholar Sayyid Ahmed Jalaludheen Bukhari in early 16th century. He is buried at Kannur. Sayyids selected coastal areas like Kannur, Koyilandy, Kappad, Mampuram, Vadakara, Ponani and Kochi to settle.

Al-Bukhari Thangal families migrated from Bukhara in Uzbekistan and now these families are living throughout India. The Delhi Shahi Imam is one of the famous personality coming from the Bukhari family. Bukhari family have played an important role in spreading 'Sufism' throughout India.

Sayyids are widely spread in various regions of India such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, etc. In Kerala, Sayyid or Thangal family members are located mainly in Thrissur district (Chavakkad Bukhara, Padoor, Mathilakam), Malappuram district, Kozhikode district, Kannur district and Kasargod district.

Politics

Among the leaders of Sunni Islam in kerala,Thangals (Sayyid family) have an important place. Varakkal Mullokoya Thangal was one of them who founded [Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama|Samastha]] a religious council of Sunni Muslims in Kerala. In 1989 Samastha devided into two groups.Sayyid Abdul Rahman Kunhikkoya Thangal Al Bukhari, popularly known as Ullal Thangal, was the President of one of the groups who was also a Thangal.Syed Jifri Muthukkoya Thangal is the Current President of the another group.[Syed Haidarali Shihab Thangal is the current President of Kerala state unit of Indian Union Muslim League.

Sufi Path

Most of the thangals in kerala follows sufi path.Mamburam Sayyid Alavi Thangal was a famous sufi and Spiritual leader of Malabar in the reign of Tipu Sultan.When the Sufi Path was going to be misused and led to non-Islamic concepts Varakkal Mullokoya Thangal a fomous sufi of the first half of twentieth century founded Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, the scholastic Assembly of 40 selected prominent Sunni-Sufi Scholars of Kerala to protect muslims from fake sufis and Salafi terrorist ideology and propagate real islamic ideology to Kerala Muslims.All of the members of the Assembly followed defferent Sufi ways(Thariqah) such as Qadiriyya,Rifaiyya,Naqshabandiyya,Ba alaviyya etc..

Thottumgham Thangal popularly known as Karutha Thangal resting in peace at Thottumugham Aluva whose descendants are being called thottumugham thangals and Konnara Thangal popularly known as konjalla uppappa whose descendants residing at Konnara in malappuram district known as konnara thangals were the real sufis of british kerala.

The only mahallu (local body of muslim establishing under local mosques)exclusive to thangals is Konnara Muslim Jama-ath in Malappuram district.

All Qabeela Sadath Association (AQSA)is a registered association for Thangals in kerala and active in the welfare of thangal families.
