Production

Development and filming

This season of the Race traveled a little over {{convert|35000|mi|km}} to 20 cities and across four continents.[4] Filming started on June 18, 2011, with teams seen leaving Los Angeles International Airport and heading to Taiwan.[5] The starting line was located at the Hsi Lai Temple in the foothills of Hacienda Heights, California. As with the previous season, racers had a task they had to perform before receiving tickets to their first destination.[4] American film crews were also spotted in Hillerød, Denmark, and were suspected to be there for The Amazing Race; marking the first time the Race had visited Denmark.[6] Besides Denmark, this season also included first time visits to Malawi, Belgium, and Indonesia.[7]

Two new game elements were introduced in this season. Leg 1 introduced the Hazard, a penalty that one team incurs for being the last team to finish the starting-line task. According to Keoghan, the Hazard was added to "test people's mental strength out of the gate", and claims it had a "rolling effect" throughout the rest of the Race.[8] Leg 2 was the first time in which two teams were eliminated at the Pit Stop (In Season 10, two teams were eliminated during the first leg, but not both at the Pit Stop. In Season 15, two teams were eliminated after the first episode).[7] In addition, a stand, implemented in Season 2 which shows the city and country of the Pit Stop is removed in this season.

During the first leg, racer Kaylani lost her passport at a gas station while en route from Hsi Lai Temple to Los Angeles International Airport. She and teammate Lisa returned to the station to search for the passport but could not find it, and opted to proceed to the airport in the hope that another racer had picked it up. The camera crew accompanying the team had seen the dropped passport, but could not tell Kaylani or Lisa or otherwise act on it; instead they informed the producers of the situation. The producers prepared to conduct an impromptu elimination and host Phil Keoghan rushed to the airport. The passport was found by two bystanders who had previously helped another team at the gas station; after posting about the incident on Twitter, a fan of the show advised them to take the passport to the airport, and they were able to return it to Kaylani before her scheduled flight.[9]

Cast

{{see also|List of The Amazing Race (U.S. TV series) contestants}}

Applications for the 19th season were due on January 4, 2011. Semi-finalist interviews and the final casting interviews took place in Los Angeles in March 2011.

The cast included: former Survivor winners and dating couple Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca; Zac Sunderland, the first person under 18 to sail solo around the world, and his father Laurence;[5] retired NFL player Marcus Pollard with his wife Amani; and former Olympic snowboarders Andy Finch and Tommy Czeschin.[7]

Winners Ernie and Cindy were married on March 10, 2012; the teams of: Ron and Bill, Kaylani and Lisa, Liz and Marie, Justin and Jennifer, Laurence and Zac, Amani and Marcus, and Jeremy and Sandy were in the wedding party. The newlyweds traveled to Fiji for their honeymoon, on a trip they won on Leg 8 of the Race. They later appeared in The Amazing Race 29 in which they handed tickets to the final three teams to enter Wrigley Field.

This is one of the seasons that is not represented in the cast of The Amazing Race: All-Stars.

One of the competitors, Bill Alden, died on June 10, 2016, at the age of 69 from pancreatic cancer.[10]

  • An {{orange (color)|orange н}} indicates that the team was penalized for finishing last in the Starting Line task and would have to perform the Hazard.
  • An {{blue|underlined blue}} team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg and had to perform a Speed Bump during the next leg of the race.
  • A {{brown|brown ⊃}} or a {{cyan|cyan ⋑}} indicates that the team chose to use one of the two U-Turns in a Double U-Turn; {{brown|⊂}} or {{cyan|⋐}} indicates the team who received it; {{cyan|⋐⋑}} around a leg number indicates that only one of the two available U-Turns was used; {{sup sub|{{brown|⊂}}|{{cyan|⋑}}}} indicates that the team was U-Turned, but they used the second U-Turn on another team.
  • An underlined leg number indicates that there was no mandatory rest period at the Pit Stop and all teams were ordered to continue racing, although the first place team was still awarded a prize for that leg. An underlined team placement indicates that the team came in last on a "continue racing" leg, was ordered to continue racing, and didn't have to do a Speed Bump in the next leg.

  1. {{note|1}} Kaylani performed the Hazard task.
  2. ^{{note label|2||a}}{{note label|2||b}} Leg 2 was a double-elimination leg. The last two teams to be checked in at the Pit Stop were both eliminated.
  3. {{note|3}} Eight of the 11 teams arrived at the Pit Stop without donating all of their money at the 'Aisyiyah Orphanage (see below), and had to go back and donate the rest of their money before being allowed to check in. The initial placements for all teams are as follows (the three boldfaced teams were not asked to turned back):
    1st: Ernie & Cindy; 2nd: Liz & Marie; 3rd: Bill & Cathi; 4th: Andy & Tommy; 5th: Jeremy & Sandy; 6th: Justin & Jennifer; 7th: Amani & Marcus; 8th: Laurence & Zac; 9th: Ethan & Jenna; 10th: Kaylani & Lisa; 11th: Ron & Bill

  5. {{note label|5||a}}{{note label|5||b}} Justin & Jennifer and Bill & Cathi initially arrived in 1st and 3rd, respectively, but did not pay the truck drivers who helped them to the Pit Stop. They were required to turn back and pay their drivers before being allowed to check in. Their placements were dropped to 2nd and 6th place, respectively.
  6. {{note|6}} Ernie & Cindy used the Express Pass to bypass the Detour in Leg 7.
  7. {{note|7}} Laurence & Zac used their U-Turn power on Amani & Marcus; however, they had already passed the U-Turn point and were therefore unaffected by it.

  • Taipei (Dajia Riverside Park {{zh icon}})
  • Taipei (Martyrs' Shrine) {{TAR clue|Pit Stop|1}}

At the first Roadblock of the Race, one team member had to find a nearby payphone and called a particular phone number. The person on the other end gave the racer one of Confucius's proverbs ("In all things success depends on previous preparation, and without such previous preparation there is sure to be failure."). Without writing it down, they had to repeat the proverb verbatim to a temple monk. Once they got the proverb right, they received their next clue. If they were incorrect, they had to call the number, again, and make another attempt.

The Hazard task required Kaylani and Lisa to travel to the Core Pacific City Mall, where one of them had to perform an indoor bungee jump before they could receive their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At the Starting Line, teams had to search through several hundred oil-paper umbrellas for one that had the correct set of letters ("TAI) printed on it. When combined twice with their clue of six other letters ("WANPEI") it revealed the name of their first destination: Taipei, Taiwan. Once they presented Phil with the correct umbrella, he gave them keys to one of 11 Ford Explorers parked outside the temple. The last team to complete the task was penalized with the Hazard.
    • The first eight teams to arrive at the airport were booked on an earlier flight from Los Angeles to Taipei; the remaining three teams were booked on a second flight on another airline that departed twenty minutes later.
  • At the Ximending Commercial District, teams were told to "look up" for their next clue, and were left to figure out that their clue was displayed on an electronic billboard at Jun Plaza, written in Chinese: {{lang|zh|台北孔廟}} (Taipei Confucius Temple).
  • At the Dajia Riverside Park, teams joined a dragon boat team. One team member kept pace by beating a drum, while the other team member joined the paddling crew on the Keelung River. Once they made it through the course, they received their next clue.

Once they located them, they had to scale up a bamboo ladder to the top before delivering them to the chieftain in exchange for their next clue.

The first Detour was a choice between Shake Your Money Maker or Be a Ticket Taker, both of which took place back in the city of Yogyakarta. In Shake Your Money Maker, teams had to dress up in costumes with one team member dancing in the streets while the other played a gamelan in order earn Rp 30,000 (US$3.40). In Be a Ticket Taker, teams had to go to the Mal Malioboro and work as motorbike parking attendants in order to earn Rp 15,000 (US$1.70) and then turn in their ticket book.

Additional tasks

  • At Legoland Billund, teams had to find the Pirate Carousel (a teacups ride), where they received a box containing a puzzle made of Lego bricks. While on the ride, they had to assemble the puzzle to reveal their next destination: the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof in Hamburg, Germany. Teams could work on the puzzle only while the ride was in motion; they had to raise their hands when the ride stopped.

Leg 10 (Belgium)

Airdate: November 27, 2011

  • Lommel (Ford Proving Grounds) {{TAR clue|Roadblock|Who wants to play with the ponies?}}
  • Ghent (Burgstraat – Hoofdbrug) {{TAR clue|Detour|Water or Waffle}}
  • Geraardsbergen (Muur van Geraardsbergen)
  • Brussels (Atomium) {{TAR clue|Pit Stop|10}}

For this Leg's Roadblock, one team member had to test drive a Ford Mustang. Teams first had to accelerate to {{convert|100|mph|abbr=on}} and then brake at a designated spot. They then had to go through a slalom course within sixteen seconds, and finish the test drive by performing two victory doughnuts before they received their next clue.

This Leg's Detour was a choice between Water and Waffle. In Water, teams used materials provided (pontoons, rope, and wood) to build a raft to search the Lieve canal {{nl icon}} for the two halves of their next clue. In Waffle, teams had to build a waffle stand and then bake and decorate eighteen Belgian waffles to the chef's satisfaction before receiving their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At the start of the leg, teams had to choose a marked Ford Fiesta and drive themselves to Ford Proving Grounds in Lommel to get their next clue.
  • At Muur van Geraardsbergen, teams released one hundred homing pigeons and then were given an address where the pigeons were flying. Once there, teams were able to retrieve their next clue from one of the pigeons.
  • After receiving the clue at Muur van Geraardsbergen, teams had to decipher the photo on the clue, and figure out their next location was at Atomium, the Pit Stop for this leg.

Leg 11 (Belgium → Netherlands → Panama)

Airdate: December 4, 2011

  • Brussels (Stockel/Stokkel metro station – The Adventures of Tintin mural)
  • {{TAR travel|train}} Brussels (Brussels-South railway station) to Amsterdam, Netherlands {{flagicon|NED}} (Schiphol railway station) (Unaired)
  • {{TAR travel|flight}} Amsterdam (Amsterdam Airport Schiphol) to Panama City, Panama {{flagicon|PAN}} (Tocumen International Airport)
  • Chagres National Park (Puerto El Corotu)
  • Chagres National Park (Parara Puru)
  • Panama City (San Francisco {{es icon}} – San Francisco Bay Towers) {{TAR clue|Roadblock|Who wants to walk on rarefied air?}}
  • Panama City (Casco Viejo – Plaza de Francia {{es icon}} – Ferdinand de Lesseps statue)
  • {{TAR clue|Detour|Filet|Sole}} Panama City (El Mercado de Mariscos or Salsipuedes Market)
  • Panama City (Cathedral Square)
  • Panama City (Panamá Viejo) {{TAR clue|Pit Stop|11}}

At this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to cross a tightrope between the San Francisco Bay Towers, 35 stories high and {{convert|65|ft|m}} across. The racer picked up their clue on the other tower, and then made the trip back to the first tower before they could continue.

This leg's Detour was a choice between Filet and Sole. In Filet, teams traveled to Panama's largest fish market, El Mercado de Mariscos, where they had to deliver fish to different marked stalls throughout the market Each stall only accepted a certain kind of fish up to a certain weight. Once they were done with their deliveries, the fishmonger gave them their next clue. In Sole, teams traveled to the Salsipuedes Market where they had to find a sandals stall and use one piece of leather each to make the sole and strapping for a pair of sandals for a customer. Once they were done with the sandals and the cobbler was pleased with their work, teams received their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • Before leaving Brussels, teams had to dress up as the two bumbling detective characters from the popular Belgian The Adventures of Tintin comics, and figure out one of the three names ("Thomson and Thompson", "Dupond and Dupont", or "Johnson and Johnston") by which the characters are known in Belgium. Then, using a photo given to them with the clue, teams had to find a man dressed as Tintin standing in front of the Tintin mural at the Stockel/Stokkel metro station and tell him any one of the name variations of the characters they were dressed as in order to receive their next clue.
  • On arriving at Parara Puru, teams signed up for one of four times to receive a temporary tattoo the next morning within 15-minute intervals, starting at 7:00 a.m. The tattoo would eventually give them their next location: the San Francisco Bay Towers in Panama City.
  • After the Roadblock, teams were given a riddle to search for a man underneath the rooster, directing them to the statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps in the Plaza de Francia.
  • At Cathedral Square, teams had to find pollera dresses and necklaces from a group of tamborito dancers, They then had to find an image shown on the necklace with a name shown on the dress to reveal their next destination, Panamá Viejo, the Pit Stop for this leg.

Leg 12 (Panama → United States)

Airdate: December 11, 2011

  • {{TAR travel|flight}} Panama City (Tocumen International Airport) to Atlanta, Georgia, USA {{flagicon|USA}} (Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport)
  • Atlanta (FlightSafety International)
  • Atlanta (Margaret Mitchell House & Museum) {{TAR clue|Roadblock|Who gives a damn?}}
  • Atlanta (Turner Field)
  • Atlanta (Swan House) {{TAR clue|Pit Stop}}

The final Roadblock required one team member to type out the team's next clue using a Remington typewriter to duplicate an example message. The duplicate had to be perfectly straight and neat, with no mistakes. Additionally, the typewriters used for the task did not have a key for the number 1; racers were left to figure out that they had to use the key for the lower-case letter l as a substitute.

Additional tasks
  • At FlightSafety International, teams had to pick a flight instructor who taught them how to operate a Learjet flight simulator. They then had to successfully complete a simulated landing at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport from an altitude of {{convert|2500|ft}} in order to obtain the next clue.
  • The clue from FlightSafety International instructed teams to go to "the residence formerly known as 'The Dump'", leaving them to figure out that this was a reference to the house of Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind.
  • On completing the Roadblock, teams had to deduce that the series of three numbers on the clue were a homage to Hank Aaron: 44 (his uniform number), 715 (the number of home runs he hit to break the Major League Baseball home run record) and 74 (the year in which he broke the record). Teams had to figure out that they were to go to Turner Field.
  • At Turner Field teams had to use a large vertical map and rock climbing gear to map out the Race course from start to finish by looping a rope through a series of carabiners on the map, each representing a specific country (Germany and the Netherlands were not required in the solution). One team member worked on the map while his or her teammate gave help from the ground. Teams were not allowed to use notes while working on the task, and the countries on the map were unlabeled. Once the map was looped completely, they received their final clue.
