His thesis, under the same name, first appeared in the May 1901 edition of Popular Science Monthly. It was republished in book form by the American Unitarian Association in 1902 and again in 1910. It was intended to promote the eugenics movement and bring its aims to a broader non-academic audience. Jordan hypothesized that much of the social decline after wars stemmed from "the dysgenic effects of that conflict, which destroyed the fittest and left young widows who did not remarry and produce more children."[1] In critiquing Jordan's paper in 2001, Elof Axel Carlson proposed that the term "blood" in the title, "although biologically inaccurate," was deliberately included by the author for "metaphorical value" and to make the concept of "inborn cultural behaviors" accessible to a general reader.[2] Thurtle (2007), referencing Walter Benjamin, claims that the work owes more to the "storytelling" genre than to strictly scientific enquiry.[3] References1. ^{{cite book|last=Stern|first=Alexandra|title=Eugenic nation: faults and frontiers of better breeding in modern America|publisher=University of California Press|year=2005|pages=233|isbn=978-0-520-24443-6|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Wnzy44p-DzYC&pg=PA233&dq=%22for+an+extended+discussion,+see+david+starr+jordan%22&cd=1#v=onepage&q=%22for%20an%20extended%20discussion%2C%20see%20david%20starr%20jordan%22&f=false|accessdate=2010-01-21}} 2. ^{{cite book|last=Carlson|first=Elof Axel|title=The unfit: a history of a bad idea |publisher=CSHL Press|year=2001|pages=190|isbn=978-0-87969-587-3|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=EoiTjLH3BqIC&pg=PA190&dq=%22when+he+first+presented+the+blood+of+a+nation%22&cd=1#v=onepage&q=%22when%20he%20first%20presented%20the%20blood%20of%20a%20nation%22&f=false|accessdate=2010-01-21}} 3. ^{{cite book|last=Thurtle|first=Phillip|title=The emergence of genetic rationality: space, time, & information in American biological science, 1870-1920|publisher= University of Washington Press|year=2007|pages=251|isbn=978-0-295-98750-7|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=tN_BRKCA3j8C&pg=PA251&dq=%22In+the+beginning+of+his+1901+popular+article+on+eugenics%22&lr=&as_brr=3&cd=1#v=onepage&q=%22In%20the%20beginning%20of%20his%201901%20popular%20article%20on%20eugenics%22&f=false|accessdate=2010-01-21}} Sources
