They interviewed about a thousand individuals in each country on their views of government and political life. As they define it, the "civic culture" (singular) is "based on communication and persuasion, a culture of consensus and diversity, a culture that [permits] change but [moderates] it" (Almond and Verba 1963, 8). They identify three political structures: participant, subject, and parochial.[4] They consider political culture to be the element that connects individual attitudes with the overall political system structure.[5] Almond and Verba considered the Italian emphasis on the family as the driving main force for society as "amoral" (in the words of Edward Banfield (The Moral Basis of a Backward Society, 1958), or "exclusive", and believed that such a culture would impede the culture's potential for developing a "sense of community and civic culture," which they saw as a necessary background for "effective democracy".[6] Reception and criticismsSeymour Lipset wrote in The Democratic Century that Almond and Verba "did argue persuasively that the extent of civic culture could be predicted by structural and historical factors" but that there was also "strong evidence that some aspects of the civic culture were powerfully associated with education levels, across national borders".[7]The Civic Culture was criticized for having an "Anglo-American bias", with the authors stating that only the United Kingdom and the United States possessed the capability for long term democratic stabilization.[8] Critics also expressed skepticism over the accuracy of depicting a culture based upon individual interviews and that the approach was "ethnocentric and more prescriptive than objective and empirical".[9]References1. ^{{cite book|last=Baker|first=Kendall|title=Germany Transformed: Political Culture and the New Politics|year=181|publisher=Harvard University Press|isbn=0674353153|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=HUQGCmSxSXcC&pg=PA320 }} {{DEFAULTSORT:Civic Culture, The}}2. ^{{cite book|last=Wilson|first=Catherine|title=The Politics of Latino Faith|year=2008|publisher=NYU Press|isbn=0814794130|pages=17–18|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=mQIcIRuzif4C&pg=PA18 }} 3. ^{{cite book|last=Caramani|first=Daniele|title=Comparative Politics|year=2008|publisher=Oxford University Press|isbn=0199298416|pages=420|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=sgYF9Us4UNIC&pg=PA420 }} 4. ^{{cite book|last=Crothers|first=Lane|title=Culture and Politics: A Reader|year=2000|publisher=Palgrave Macmillan|isbn=0312233000|pages=51|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=S-YEWwAPTtcC&pg=PA51 }} 5. ^{{cite book|last=Franklin|first=Daniel|title=Politics and Film: The Political Culture of Film in the United States|year=2006|publisher=Rowman & Littlefield Publishers|isbn=0742538095|pages=4|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Sv7PFrRzzPgC&pg=PA4 }} 6. ^{{cite book|last=Kawata|first=Junichi|title=Comparing Political Corruption And Clientelism|year=2006|publisher=Ashgate Pub Co|isbn=0754643565|pages=145|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=X3Tb0Glw3G0C&pg=PA145 }} 7. ^{{cite book|last=Lipset|first=Seymour|title=The Democratic Culture|year=2004|publisher=University of Oklahoma Press|isbn=0806136189|pages=201|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=adE09eMgVjsC&pg=PA201 }} 8. ^{{cite book|last=Axleford|first=Barry|title=Politics: An Introduction|year=1997|publisher=Routledge|isbn=0415110750|pages=58–63}} 9. ^{{cite book|last=Barrington|first=Lowell|title=Comparative Politics: Structures and Choices|year=2009|publisher=Wadsworth Publishing|isbn=0618493190|pages=108|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=3uuAtazupnAC&pg=PA108 }} 6 : Books about politics of the United Kingdom|Books about politics of the United States|Books about politics of Italy|Political culture|1963 books|1963 in politics |
