The school opened in 1909 under the auspices of Samuel L. Patterson, the school's namesake and the first elected agricultural commissioner for the state of North Carolina. Patterson was most recently noted for its successful athletic program, particularly in men's basketball. Citing financial concerns,[1] the school closed its doors in 2009,[2] and the facility was leased to the Caldwell County Schools system in 2012.[3] Notable former athletes
