{{refimprove|date=November 2010}}The Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness (PCEH) is a non-profit organization in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania whose purpose is finding long-term solutions to the homelessness problem in the Philadelphia area. PCEHhas been listed as a model community-based homelessness prevention agency by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. [1]

Background information

Since its inception in 1981, PCEH has worked with federal, state, city and local governments to find practical solutions to ending homelessness. This includes beginning an outreach program and finding ways for governments to reform the way they spend funds on housing, poverty and the homeless. PCEH seeks only private funding to maintain its independence.

Services provided

PCEH helps the homeless maintain their access to vital services. The PCEH Day Center helps the homeless with obtaining legal documents, counseling, and job preparation. The Center also helps them obtain detoxification/rehabilitation and housing.

Outreach

Several times each week, the PCEH Outreach Coordinator leads volunteers onto the streets to meet with the homeless. The goal is to inform the homeless about services, persuade them to use shelters, and listen to their concerns. The outreach efforts have been endorsed by many community efforts to include Villanova University[2] as well as the University of Notre Dame Summer Learning Social Concerns. [3]

Safe Home Philadelphia

In 2005, PCEH introduced Safe Home Philadelphia. This program uses the Housing First Strategy for homeless families. This strategy involves finding housing for them first and then attacking their other problems. Safe Home Philadelphia was covered by the Philadelphia Inquirer[4] in an article posted in February 2008. The article was entitled The New Mandate: First, find them home and focused on their methodology of housing families through Housing First.
