The Impressionist painting depicts a horse racing at Longchamp and is currently conserved at the Art Institute of Chicago. It has been exhibited many times, the first one at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in January 1884.[1] The work is particularly innovative. About the painting, the Art Institute of Chicago said it "is startling. We find ourselves on the racecourse with a cluster of onrushing horses and jockeys bearing directly down on us. With a few judicious exceptions—the vertical starting post left of center; the crisp rectangle of the viewing-stand roof at the right—everything is blurred, a device that heightens the sense of explosive movement of the galloping horses."[2] References1. ^{{cite web |title=Édouard Manet, French, 1832-1883, The Races at Longchamp, 1866 |url=http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/81533 |publisher=Art Institute of Chicago |accessdate=27 March 2010}} {{Manet}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Races at Longchamp, The}}2. ^{{cite book |title=Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in The Art Institute of Chicago |url=http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/resource/54 |publisher=Art Institute of Chicago |year=2000 |page=22 |accessdate=27 March 2010}} 4 : 1866 paintings|Paintings by Édouard Manet|Paintings of the Art Institute of Chicago|Horses in art |
