It was leaked via BitTorrent on 12 August 2009, possibly by the band, and released on 17 August as a free download from the Radiohead website. ReleaseOn 12 August 2009, "These Are My Twisted Words" appeared unannounced on What.CD, a BitTorrent tracker.[1] A text file included in the torrent file contained ASCII art, a cryptic poem and a reference to a release date of 17 August.[1] Commentators including the Guardian and Rolling Stone speculated that Radiohead had leaked the song themselves following the unconventional pay-what-you-want release of their seventh album In Rainbows (2007).[2][3] On 17 August, Radiohead released "These Are My Twisted Words" as a free download from their website and as a torrent file hosted by Mininova.[4] The download included several pieces of artwork by Yorke and longtime Radiohead collaborator Stanley Donwood, with the suggestion to print them on tracing paper and put "in an order that pleases you".[4] Radiohead performed the song on their 2012 King of Limbs tour.[1] Composition"These Are My Twisted Words" opens with a motorik beat[5] from drummer Philip Selway before Thom Yorke's vocal enters.[6] Daniel Kreps of Rolling Stone noted a krautrock influence and likened the song to the In Rainbows track "Weird Fishes / Arpeggi".[3] Bill Bradley of Vanity Fair said it had a "signature eerie Radiohead sound".[7] Matthew Schnipper of the Fader described it as a "simple song" with "a plodding, stubborn forward spirit".[6] ReceptionBrian Parks of PopMatters gave "These Are My Twisted Words" seven out of ten, describing it as "the most recent in a long line of unconventionally beautiful songs for which Radiohead is renowned".[8] Bradley of Vanity Fair wrote that "all the converted" would like the song.[7] Ryan Dombal of Pitchfork, however, wrote that its "nauseous guitars, featherweight motorik beat and vaguely whiny lyrics almost read as parody" and concluded that the song "isn't as enticing as its method of distribution".[5] In 2016, Rolling Stone included it on its list of "20 Insanely Great Radiohead Songs Only Hardcore Fans Know".[9] References1. ^{{cite news |url=http://news.cnet.com/8301-13515_3-10309227-26.html|title=Did Radiohead just leak the first song from their new EP? |publisher=CNET |author= Harrison Hoffman |date=13 August 2009 |accessdate=21 August 2009}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2009/aug/14/new-radiohead-song|title=Was the new Radiohead song leaked by the band?|author=Sean Michaels|date=14 August 2009|publisher=The Guardian|accessdate=21 August 2009}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/new-radiohead-song-these-are-my-twisted-words-leaks-20090813|title=New Radiohead Song "These Are My Twisted Words" Leaks|author=Daniel Kreps|date=13 August 2009|publisher=Rolling Stone|accessdate=21 August 2013}} 4. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace/index.php?a=497 |title=These Are My Twisted Words |author=Jonny Greenwood |date=17 August 2009 |publisher=Dead Air Space (radiohead.com) |accessdate=21 August 2009 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20090819035635/http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace/index.php?a=497 |archivedate=19 August 2009 |df= }} 5. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/11454-radiohead-these-are-my-twisted-words/|title=Radiohead - "These Are My Twisted Words"|author=Ryan Dombal|first=|date=24 August 2009|website=|publisher=Pitchfork|accessdate=23 May 2014}} 6. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.thefader.com/2009/08/17/radiohead-these-are-my-twisted-words-mp3/|title=Radiohead, “These Are My Twisted Words” MP3|author=Matthew Schnipper|date=17 August 2009|publisher=The Fader|accessdate=23 May 2014}} 7. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2009/08/new-radiohead-mp3-these-are-my-twisted-words|title=New Radiohead MP3: "These Are My Twisted Words"|last=Bradley|first=Bill|website=The Hive|language=en|access-date=2019-03-31}} 8. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.popmatters.com/post/110307-radiohead-these-are-my-twisted-words-new-song/ | title=Radiohead - "These Are My Twisted Words" (stream) | publisher=PopMatters | date=24 August 2009 | accessdate=23 May 2014 | author=Brian Parks}} 9. ^1 2 {{Cite web|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/20-insanely-great-radiohead-songs-only-hardcore-fans-know-20160307/these-are-my-twisted-words-2009-20160304|title=20 Insanely Great Radiohead Songs Only Hardcore Fans Know|date=7 March 2016|website=Rolling Stone|access-date=23 November 2017}} External links
