Thiess Indonesia is one of Indonesia’s largest private contractors working in the resource, process engineering, infrastructure, and power sectors. Services delivered to these industries include contract mining and mine development, multidiscipline engineering, procurement and construction services for facilities and plant construction, mineral processing, along with civil infrastructure works for green or brown field project development. HistoryThiess first commenced operations in Indonesia in 1972 through a partnership arrangement which saw Thiess Bros Pty Ltd acquired 50% of Petrosea. In 1972, an economic downturn in Australia meant fewer contracts and made Thiess look towards opportunities abroad and create an International Division to explore overseas opportunities. By 1975, Thiess acquired the remaining shareholding and the company name was changed to PT Thiess Bros. In 1984 Thiess Bros operations were acquired by C.S.R. in a corporate takeover. CSR were not interested in the overseas operations and the Indonesian operations were sold off to Leighton Contractors and Thiess withdrew its operations with the operating licence reverted to PT Petrosea. On the 17 November 1988, PT. Thiess Contractors Indonesia was re-established and incorporated. On the 17 November 1988 PT Thiess Contractors Indonesia was registered. TCI was established to provide mining and construction services to Indonesia’s growing industry sectors. The first major mining contract was awarded in March 1989 by BHP at Senakin Mine in East Kalimantan with a value of US$23 million. The contract involved overburden removal, mining and coal hauling to the port. With first works beginning on the 1 May 1989. Through the 1990s, Thiess Indonesia was very successful in securing a significant share of the infrastructure works associated with the development of major mines by international mining companies. In addition, Thiess Indonesia has been successful in servicing a number of long-term mining contracts, which are still in progress today. In more recent years, Thiess Indonesia has diversified into Telecommunications projects and the Oil and Gas sector. OperationsOver the past 20 years Thiess Indonesia has delivered more than 200 projects across most of the Indonesian regions. It now has more than 8,000 employees and US$2.5 billion worth of Work In Hand. In 2009 the location produced over 30MT of coal and 250 M BCM of overburden and operating coal wash plants producing more than 10 MT of coal.
