This Will Be the Death of Us is the second studio album by American rock band Set Your Goals, released July 21, 2009 on Epitaph Records.

Background and recording

In February 2008, vocalist Jordan Brown said the group had been "busy working on new songs over the last few months".[8] In May 2008, the band posted "The Fallen..." online.[9] While performing on Warped Tour, guitarist Audelio Flores, Jr. said the group had been writing a lot and were in the process of working on three new songs. Drummer Mike Ambrose said they had "demoed a little bit" and have "a lot of skeletons" of songs.[10] He added that the group were aiming to release a new album by spring 2009.[10] On August 18, it was announced that the band was bought out of their contract with independent label Eulogy Recordings for $125,000. In the same announcement, it was revealed that the band was in the process of writing their next album.[11] Though Flores said the group were going to be recording in October and November,[10] the group were still in the writing process. On October 30, it was announced that guitarist Dan Coddaire had re-joined the group after initially leaving in 2006.[12]

The album was produced by Mike Green (Paramore, The Matches)[13] and is their debut on Epitaph Records after their manager reportedly paid their previous label, Eulogy Recordings, to buy out their contract.[14] Recording was completed in late March.[15] The album features various guest vocals including Vinnie Caruana of I Am the Avalanche and The Movielife on opener and title track, "This Will Be the Death of Us". Hayley Williams of Paramore also features on "The Few That Remain", whilst ex-vocalist of Turmoil Jon Gula is featured on "Gaia Bleeds (Make Way For Man)". The album is closed with the 90s skate punk influenced "Our Ethos: A Legacy to Pass On", featuring vocals from New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert.[13] Jordan Pundik, also of New Found Glory provides vocals on the Japanese bonus track "The Lost Boys".[20]

Release

In late March, it was revealed that the album would be released in late July.[15] Between late March and early May, the band supported New Found Glory on their headlining tour of the US.[16] On March 24, it was announced that the band had signed to independent label Epitaph Records.[17] The band appeared at The Bamboozle festival in early May.[18] In late May, the band went on a brief tour of Japan with All Time Low.[19] On June 2, the band said that if 5,000 people retweet one of their tweets, they would release a track,[20] and the following day, "This Will Be the Death of Us" was posted on their Myspace profile.[21] Shortly afterwards, the band toured Australia as part of the Take Action Tour.[22] In July, the band went on a tour of the US with Four Year Strong, Fireworks, the Swellers and Grave Maker.[23]

While on the tour, This Will Be the Death of Us was released on July 21.[30] Two days later, a music video was released for "This Will Be the Death of Us".[24] Further dates were added, extending the tour into late August.[25] On September 28, a music video was released for "Summer Jam".[26] Between late September and mid-November, the band supported on Mayday Parade on the AP Fall Ball Tour.[27] In December, the group went on a UK tour.[28] In January and February 2010, the group supported Motion City Soundtrack on their headlining tour of the US,[29] which was followed by performances at Soundwave festival in Australia in February and March.[30] Between late June and early August, the band performed on Warped Tour.[31] On July 10, a music video was released for "Gaia Bleeds (Make Way for Man)".[32] In December, the band supported You Me at Six on their headlining UK tour.[33]
