Born in York, Western Australia, he was educated at Catholic schools and at Perth Technical College before becoming an engineer. He farmed at Brookton and at York before entering politics. In 1936, he was appointed to the Australian Senate to fill a casual vacancy; he represented the Country Party. He was defeated in 1937. In a 1940 by-election for the House of Representatives seat of Swan, Marwick was elected to succeed Henry Gregory. He was the first West Australian to have served in both houses of federal parliament.
