Tiler Kalyn Peck (born January 12, 1989)[1] is a professional ballet dancer who is a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. She is noted for dancing at the Kennedy Honors ceremony twice in front of President and First Lady Obama.[2]

Personal life

Born in Bakersfield, California, Peck started her studies at her mother's ballet studio in Bakersfield, at the age of two.[3] She started her formal training in classical ballet at the age of seven when she received private lessons in Hollywood from Alla Khaniashvili, a former dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet.[4] Later, she began to study with New York City Ballet dancers Colleen and Patricia Neary in California.[3] During this time she enrolled at the Westside School of Ballet in Santa Monica where she studied with NYCB principal Yvonne Mousey and learned the Balanchine technique.[4]

Tiler Peck married New York City principal ballet dancer Robert Fairchild, on June 22, 2014 in New York. The couple separated in 2017.[5][6]

Ballet career

While still in New York performing for the play The Music Man, she entered at the age of twelve to the School of American Ballet for the winter term of 2000-2001 and returned for the summer of 2002-2003. In this year, she signed up as a full-time student.[4][7] In September 2004, she began as an apprentice with the New York City Ballet. In February of the following year, she joined the company as a member of the corps de ballet. In December 2006, she was promoted to soloist and in October 2009, to principal dancer.[4]

Since 2012, Tiler has been a spokeswoman, guest designer and model for the dance-wear company "Body Wrappers".[12] In 2012 and 2014, Peck danced at the Kennedy Honors ceremony twice, in front of president and Mrs. Obama.[4][2] In 2014, she started "Tiler Peck Designs", her own collection.[8] In the same year, she performed at the Laguna House Festival, with her colleague New York City Ballet dancer Joaquín De Luz.[3] Later, Peck went to Washington to perform in the musical Little Dancer, directed by Susan Stroman.

Her dance repertoire includes works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Susan Stroman, Christopher Wheeldon, Peter Martins and Justin Peck.[3][4][9] Among the most famous ballets she has performed are Jewels, The Nutcracker, Raymonda Variations, La Sylphide, Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.[4]

Other appearances

Tiler Peck has explored other activities besides ballet, such as musical theater and acting. As she had also studied in jazz, acting and singing.[4] At the age of 11, she obtained a role in the production of The Music Man on Broadway and also starred in On the Town. In 2014, Peck played the title role of the Kennedy Center production of the musical Little Dancer directed by Susan Stroman. The musical is inspired by the work of sculptor and painter Edgar Degas.[4][7] She performed as Clara in the "Radio City Christmas Spectacular".[4]

She has had small parts in movies. Her appearances include A time for Dancing (2000), Geppetto (2000), Donnie Darko (2001), Catfish (2010), Enemy Within (2014) and Ballet 422 (2014).[4]

In TV, Peck made a guest appearance on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. She played the role of Dewdrop in Live from Lincoln Center’s George Balanchine’s "The Nutcracker" in 2011.[4][3] In 2013, she performed the role of Louise Bigelow in Rodgers & Hammerstein´s Carousel.[4]

Peck was the main focus of the 2018 documentary movie Ballet Now[10]. Ballet Now was shown at the 2018 Seattle International Film Festival and was available on Hulu starting in July 2018.

Designer

Tiler Peck is also the designer of Tiler Peck Designs for Body Wrappers. As an athlete and ballerina herself, she helped in the concept and design of the product line that includes leotards, dresses, tutus, shorts, skirts and tunics.
