A New South Wales representative centre, he played his club football in Sydney for Balmain who he captained, and with whom he won several premierships. During his career he was described as, "one of the heaviest tacklers playing rugby league."[3] Playing careerBourke progressed through Balmain's junior ranks before debuting in first grade in the 1939 NSWRFL season. Later that year he played in his first grand final, scoring two tries in his team's victory over South Sydney. At the end of the 1944 NSWRFL season Patton captained Balmain from the wing in the grand final against Newtown, winning 12-8. Succeeding Arthur Patton as Balmain captain for the 1945 NSWRFL season, Patton again lead them to the grand final which was narrowly lost to Eastern Suburbs. He led Balmain to successive premierships in 1946 (kicking two goals) and 1947 (playing at lock). He captained Balmain to the 1948 NSWRFL season's grand final, hoping to make it three premierships in a row to equal Souths' record of eleven premierships.[4] He scored his team's lone try and goal, but Balmain were beaten by Wests. In 1949 Bourke left Sydney and took on a position of captain-coach in Griffith, New South Wales. Post-playingAfter his retirement from the playing field, Bourke continued his association with the Balmain club through coaching and as a selector. He died in 2001, aged 83.[5] In 2003 Bourke was named in the Balmain Tigers team of the century.[6] and was thus one of the inaugural inductees of the Balmain Tigers Hall of Fame in 2005.[7] References1. ^Rugby League Project {{Balmain Tigers Team of the Century}}{{Balmain squad - 1939 NSWRFL premiers}}{{Balmain squad - 1944 NSWRFL premiers}}{{Balmain Tigers squad 1946 NSWRFL premiership}}{{Balmain Tigers squad 1947 NSWRFL premiership}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Bourke, Tom}}2. ^{{Cite web |url=http://www.yesterdayshero.com.au/PlayerProfile_Tom-Bourke_1142.aspx# |title=Yesterdays Hero |access-date=20 November 2009 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120903183701/http://www.yesterdayshero.com.au/PlayerProfile_Tom-Bourke_1142.aspx# |archive-date=3 September 2012 |dead-url=yes |df=dmy-all }} 3. ^{{cite news|publisher=The Sydney Morning Herald|title=Tom Bourke Proves His Fitness|author=|page=4|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=kawQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=xpMDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4683,4232452|accessdate=7 January 2012|date=27 August 1948}} 4. ^{{cite news | last = | first = | coauthors = | title = League grand final on soft field| work = The Sydney Morning Herald| place = Australia| pages = 7| language = | publisher = | date = 1948-09-18| url = https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=pKwQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=xpMDAAAAIBAJ&pg=7327,5893821| accessdate = 2009-11-20}} 5. ^{{cite web |last = |first = |authorlink = |coauthors = |title = Tom Bourke |work = yesterdayshero.com.au |publisher = SmartPack International Pty Ltd |year = 2008 |url = http://www.yesterdayshero.com.au/PlayerProfile_Tom-Bourke_1142.aspx |format = |doi = |accessdate = 2009-11-20 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20120903183701/http://www.yesterdayshero.com.au/PlayerProfile_Tom-Bourke_1142.aspx# |archive-date = 3 September 2012 |dead-url = yes |df = dmy-all}} 6. ^{{cite news | last = AAP| first = | coauthors = | title = Balmain team of the century| work = | place = Sydney| pages = | language = | publisher = CBS Interactive Inc.| date = 2003-05-01| url = http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_7235/is_200305/ai_n29694576/| accessdate = 2009-11-20}} {{Dead link|date=October 2010|bot=H3llBot}} 7. ^{{cite web |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |title=Balmain Tigers Hall of Fame Inductees |work=tigers.org.au |publisher=Balmain Leagues Club |date= |url=http://www.tigers.org.au/rugbyleague/hall-of-fame/inductees/ |format= |doi= |accessdate=2009-11-20 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20111001015241/http://www.tigers.org.au/rugbyleague/hall-of-fame/inductees/ |archivedate=2011-10-01 |df= }} 8 : 1918 births|Sportsmen from New South Wales|Rugby league players from Sydney|Balmain Tigers players|New South Wales rugby league team players|2001 deaths|Sportspeople from Sydney|Rugby league centres |
