Originally from Burrumbuttock, New South Wales, he was initially interested in rugby league, but turned to Australian rules football, supporting the Sydney Swans.[1] Armstrong was drafted by Adelaide in the 2007 AFL Draft at pick number 58. Armstrong attended prestigious football school Assumption College, and also played games with TAC Cup sides NSW/ACT Rams and Calder Cannons. After being drafted, he played for SANFL club North Adelaide, and after some fine performances, was rewarded by Adelaide coach Neil Craig with many emergency spots in the lineup. He was named for his AFL debut in round 13, 2009, but was quarantined along with his housemate, teammate and fellow Assumption College graduate Richard Douglas due to a swine influenza scare, and so did not take his place on the field. Armstrong debuted in the senior side in Round 1, 2010 against Fremantle at Subiaco.[2] In September 2011 Armstrong walked out on the Adelaide Crows and requested a trade to the Sydney Swans, the club he supported as a child growing up in NSW.[3] On 16 October 2011 Armstrong was granted his wish and was traded to the Swans in exchange for Lewis Johnston.[4] In April 2012 he made his debut for the Swans, replacing club captain Adam Goodes who was suspended for the match. Goodes was one of Armstrong's childhood idols.[5] At the end of 2013 AFL season Armstrong was delisted by Sydney Swans and then joined Collingwood as a delisted free agent.[6][7] He made his debut for Collingwood in round 19 of the 2014 AFL season.[8] Armstrong was delisted at the conclusion of the 2014 AFL season, but was re-drafted by Collingwood in the rookie draft. At the conclusion of the 2015 season after only playing one senior game, Armstrong was again delisted by Collingwood.[9][10] References1. ^{{cite news| title =NAB AFL Draft Camp: Running solo| publisher =AFL.com.au| url =http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/52266/default.aspx}} 2. ^{{cite news| title =Crows must be like the tortoise| publisher =Adelaide Independent Weekly| url =http://www.independentweekly.com.au/news/local/sport/football-soccer/crows-must-be-like-the-tortoise/1792197.aspx}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/strike-three-as-crows-lose-armstrong/story-e6frecoc-1226144979141 |title=Strike three as Crows lose Armstrong|first=Andrew |last=Capel |work=The Advertiser |date=24 September 2011|accessdate=4 June 2012}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.heraldsun.com.au/archives/old-sport-pages/swan-lewis-johnston-crow-tony-armstrong-swap-clubs/story-fn69a32t-1226167515951 |title=Swan Lewis Johnston, Crow Tony Armstrong swap clubs|work= Herald Sun |date=15 October 2011|accessdate=4 June 2012}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/afl/tony-armstrong-to-play-his-first-game-as-a-sydney-swan/story-e6frexyi-1226335230402 |title=Tony Armstrong to play his first game as a Sydney Swan|first=Rob |last=Forsaith |work=The Sunday Telegraph |date=22 April 2012|accessdate=4 June 2012}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/tony-armstrong-clear-to-join-collingwood-after-being-cut-by-sydney-swans/story-fni5f22o-1226749896065 |title=Tony Armstrong clear to join Collingwood after being cut by Sydney Swans |work=Herald Sun|date=30 October 2013|accessdate=2 November 2013}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2013-11-07/armstrong-becomes-a-magpie|title=Armstrong becomes a Magpie| first=Stephen| last=Rielly| publisher=BigPond|work=Collingwoodfc.com.au|date=7 November 2013}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/armstrong-to-make-debut-for-third-afl-club-20140801-3czlo.html|title=Armstrong to make debut for third AFL club|date=1 August 2014|first=Greg |last=Buckle}} 9. ^{{cite web|title=Pies cut Armstrong, but promise to re-draft him|url=http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-10-31/pies-cut-armstrong|first=Ben|last=Guthrie| publisher=BigPond|work=Collingwoodfc.com.au|date=31 October 2014}} 10. ^{{cite web|title=Rookie Draft: Tony Armstrong|url=http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2014-12-03/rookie-draft-tony-armstrong| publisher=BigPond|work=Collingwoodfc.com.au|date=3 December 2014}} External links{{commonscat}}
