BackgroundThe town is 120 km south-west of Bloemfontein and 56 km north-east of Philippolis. It was laid out in 1891 on the farm Middelwater and attained municipal status in 1902. Named after the owners of the farm, Jan and Bastiaan Tromp.[3]{{rp|352}} It was at first called Jagersfontein Road, then Hamilton, in honour of Sir Hamilton John Goold-Adams (1858–1920), Lieutenant-Governor of the Orange River Colony from 1901 to 1910.[4] References1. ^Free State Tourism.org {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140106174825/http://www.freestatetourism.org/Towns/Trompsburg.php?town=Trompsburg |date=2014-01-06 }} {{Geographic Location2. ^1 2 3 Sum of the Main Places Madikgetla and Trompsburg from Census 2011. 3. ^{{Cite book |title=The Tourist in South Africa |last=Conolly |first=Denis |publisher=Travel-Guide (PTY) LTD |year=1975 |asin=B0000E7XZN}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Dictionary of Southern African Place Names (Public Domain)|url=https://archive.org/details/DictionaryOfSouthernAfricanPlaceNames|publisher=Human Science Research Council|page=438}} |Centre = Trompsburg |North = Edenburg |Northwest = Fauresmith, Jagersfontein |Northeast = |East = Smithfield |Southeast = Bethulie |South = Springfontein |Southwest = Philippolis |West = }}{{Xhariep District Municipality}} 3 : Populated places in the Kopanong Local Municipality|Populated places established in 1891|1891 establishments in South Africa |
