The cemetery grounds were assigned to the United Kingdom in perpetuity by King Albert I of Belgium in recognition of the sacrifices made by the British Empire in the defence and liberation of Belgium during the war.[1] FoundationThis cemetery's name means "tile factory", as it was begun in the grounds of a tile works in 1915.[2] The chimneys of the tile works were very visible and provided a means for the opposing side to calibrate their shells. This led to the cemetery itself being heavily shelled and the sites of most of the original graves were lost.[2][3] Most of the gravestones are positioned around the edges[2] of the otherwise empty-looking cemetery, and are marked "known to be buried in this cemetery", with the default additional phrase "Their glory shall not be blotted out", a line suggested by Rudyard Kipling.[4][5] References1. ^First World War, accessed 19 August 2006 2. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://ww1cemeteries.com/ww1cemeteries/tuileriesbritishcemetery.htm|title=Tuileries British Cemetery|publisher=ww1cemeteries.com|accessdate=2008-05-04}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/55902|title=CWGC :: Cemetery Details|publisher=www.cwgc.org|accessdate=2008-05-04}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.ypressalient.co.uk/War%20Diaries/Ypres%20Salient%20September%202004%20wd.htm|title=Ypres Salient September 2004|publisher=www.ypressalient.co.uk|accessdate=2008-05-04|last=Moore|first=Steve and Barbara}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/mark_honigsbaum/2007/11/pro_patria_mori.html|title=Pro patria mori? | work=The Guardian |accessdate=2008-05-04|last=Honigsbaum|first=Mark | location=London | date=2007-11-16}} External links
