Twiggs Academy is a private, college preparatory Christian school near Jeffersonville, Georgia, United States, about twenty miles south of Macon. Classes are offered for kindergarten through twelfth grade in a traditional classroom setting. Over 90% of Twiggs Academy graduates attend college.

The current head of school is Bonnie Allen Little.

Twiggs Academy is a member of the Georgia Independent School Association.

History

Twiggs Academy was established in 1970 by a group of Twiggs County parents who believed that the Middle Georgia area needed an independent college preparatory school. It was one of forty-one private schools chartered in Georgia between October 1969, and June 1970.[2]

Today Twiggs Academy is a nondenominational Christian School.

Athletics

Twiggs Academy competes in baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, softball, and track. Twiggs Academy participates in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA), and the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama (ICSGA).[3] The Trojans are a member of GISA Region 2 A.[4]

Twiggs Academy has won six State Championships:[5]

  • 1980-1981 Men's Basketball. Class A.
  • 1981-1982 Women's Basketball. Class A.
  • 1993-1994 Softball. Class AA.
  • 1995-1996 Softball. Class AA.
  • 1996-1997 Softball. Class AA.
  • 2001-2002 Women's Basketball. Class AA.

Football

Although Twiggs Academy competes in GISA in all other sports, the Trojans play football in the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama, a Christian league consisting of teams from Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.[6]

Previously Twiggs Academy played football in GISA. The Trojans fell to Eagle's Landing Christian Academy in the 1996-1997 GISA State Championship game.[7]

Rivalry

Historically, Twiggs Academy's biggest rivalries have been with Trinity Christian School and Cross Keys Christian School. In the mid-90s TA also had rivalries with Flint River Academy and Fullington Academy.

Literary

Twiggs Academy competes in GISA literary competition including events such as oral interpretation, extemporaneous speaking, trio, quartet, solo, and essay.

Twiggs Academy won its region in literary in 1994 and 1995.

One-act play

Twiggs Academy competes in GISA one-act play and won the event in its region in 2009.

Twiggs Academy won state in one-act play in 2010.[8]

Campus

A large gymnasium; a modern media center and science lab; a library; science lab; baseball, softball, and football fields; and a cafeteria are located on campus.[9]

Academics

Twiggs Academy graduates have gone on to further their educations at The University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Mercer University, Wesleyan College, Emory University, Mercer Law School, Mercer Pharmacy School, University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, Medical College of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Military College, The University of Mississippi, George Washington University, Valdosta State University, Georgia Southern University, Fort Valley State University, Middle Georgia College, Georgia College & State University, and many other fine institutions of higher learning.[10]

In addition to undergraduate degrees, Twiggs Academy graduates have earned advanced and professional degrees such as PhD, PharmD, Juris Doctor, MD, MBA, Master of Laws, Master of Education, and Doctor of Education.[10]

Public service

Twiggs Academy graduates fill many local offices in Twiggs County, Jeffersonville, Danville, and other municipalities throughout the State of Georgia, including Coroner, Probate Judge, Tax Assessor, Tax Commissioner, Clerk of Court, City Council, Mayor, and Assistant District Attorney.[11]

TA alumni have also served in every branch of the United States Armed Forces.
