Umzimvubu, the name of the Mzimvubu River is an isiXhosa name which means "home of the hippopotamus".Umzimvubu Local Municipality falls within the Alfred Nzo District of the Eastern Cape Province. The Municipal area comprises an area of 2506 square kilometres. PoliticsThe municipal council consists of fifty-three members elected by mixed-member proportional representation. Twenty-seven councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in twenty-seven wards, while the remaining twenty-six are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received. In the election of 3 August 2016 the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of forty-one seats on the council. The following table shows the results of the election.[4][5]
