At the FIBA Asia Championship 2009 in Tianjin, China, the team finished 12th after qualifying for the eighth final round with an overtime victory over Indonesia in the first round.[2] In 1997, the United Arab Emirates had its best performance in the championship, finishing in fifth place with a 4–3 record. The team beat traditional Asian powerhouse Chinese Taipei 78–62 in the fifth place game.
