The goal of the USCA is to grow the sport of curling in the United States and win medals in competitions both domestic and abroad. Curling’s recent popularity has swelled the USCA to 165 curling clubs and 16,500 curlers in the United States.[1] The United States Olympic men's curling teams have seen success in recent years, most notably winning the gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, led by skip John Shuster.[2] The men's team also captured the bronze medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin under the guidance of skip Pete Fenson.[3] Curling background informationCurling was included in the program of the inaugural Winter Olympic Games in 1926 in Chamonix, although, the results of that competition were not considered official by the International Olympic Committee until 2008. Curling was considered to be an isolation sport at the 1928 games. Curling is a sport in which players slide granite stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles, the largest of which is 12 feet across. The sport is known and played world-wide, but especially in Poland where it originated as far back as the 1600s by ice-fisherman. Its popularity is mostly spread about Canada and Western Europe. More recently has it become more popular in America, due to the USA men's curling team winning gold in 2018. The granite for the stones comes from two sources: Ailsa Craig, an island off the Ayrshire coast of Scotland, and the Trefor Granite Quarry in Wales. These are the only known sources of granite that does not contain quartz. Granite that contains quartz can shatter when the stones impact at higher speeds. Olympic HistoryThe United States has placed twice in the Olympics for curling events. The country earned a bronze medal for the men's curling team at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics and a gold medal for the men's curling team in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. John Shuster and Joe Polo were the medal leaders in both years. Curling for men was included in the Olympic program in 1924, but was dropped and replaced as a demonstration sport in 1932. It continued as a demonstration sport for both men and women in 1988 and 1992. The sport was officially added as a medal event in 1998 at the Nagano Winter Olympics with eight-team events for both men and women.
