Presidential vacations have often been contentious and a source of criticism for presidents throughout history.

History

Martha's Vineyard is one choice taken for location for vacation, since the time of Ulysses S. Grant, during 1874. Presidents who have taken a vacation there include Presidents John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama.[1][2]
  • John Adams was criticized for spending time caring for his ailing wife.[2]
  • The longest vacation by any United States president was James Madison. Madison was at the end of his presidency, when he took a four-month vacation from sometime during June 1816 until sometime during October 1816.[3]
  • James Garfield was shot while leaving Washington for his vacation.[4]
  • Theodore Roosevelt was criticized for leaving Washington for months at a time.[2]
  • Franklin Roosevelt was criticized for spending time on his yacht.[2]
  • George W. Bush was often criticized by Democrats for taking long vacations to his ranch in Crawford, Texas during the Iraq war.[2]
  • Barack Obama's vacations have been scrutinized by the media.[5] During the 2007–2012 recession he was criticized for vacationing at Martha's Vineyard.[5][6]
  • Before his election as the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump frequently criticized President Obama on Twitter for spending too much time away on vacation at too high a cost to American taxpayers.[7] President Trump, however, has spent most weekends at Mar-a-Lago or his golf course in New Jersey in his private club and estate, estimated at a cost of between $1 million and $3 million per trip.[8] At the current rate, Trump is set to outspend President Obama's total vacation costs for his two terms during his first year in office.[9] The high cost of Trump's vacations are due to high security costs for his "Southern White House." Mar-a-Lago is not only Trump's private estate, but also a members-only country club.
