The College of Engineering is an academic department at the University of Illinois at Chicago offering both undergraduate and graduate programs of study.

History

The College of Engineering predates the current campus, having been founded in 1946 at the Navy Pier campus.[1]

The college runs undergraduate and graduate programs in six academic departments.[2] The College has 159 faculty members.

Research programs in the college have grown rapidly over the years and are conducted in 6 departments and 7 interdisciplinary centers. During FY2017, the total research expenditure for the College of Engineering was more than $27 million. The college currently has over 170 funded projects totaling $84 million.{{citation needed|date=February 2017}}

Departments

The college has six departments:

  • Bioengineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil and Materials Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

Research

The college performs research in four interdisciplinary areas:

  • Biotechnology
  • Nano-Technology
  • Information Technology
  • Energy/Environmental Technology

Institutes and centers

The College of Engineering houses some internal institutes and centers:[3]

  • Center for Research and Instruction in Technologies for Electronic Security
  • Electronic Visualization Laboratory
  • Energy Resources Center
  • Manufacturing Research Center (joint with UIUC)
  • Nanotechnology Core Facility
  • Advancement of Smart Infrastructure Sensor Technology

Additionally, faculty participate in many university-wide centers, including:

  • Institute for Environmental Science and Policy
  • National Center for Data Mining
  • Urban Transportation Center
