[3] Mälardalen University is the world's first environmentally certified school according to the international standard ISO 14001. ResearchThe University has six different research specialisations: educational sciences and mathematics, embedded systems, future energy, health and welfare, industrial economics and management, and innovation and product realisation. EducationThe University have education in economics, health and welfare, teacher education and technology as well as artistic education in classical music and opera. Education at the research level is given within a dozen subjects. MDH vs Connie Askenbäck DickinsonThe university was sued in 2016 by US student Connie Askenbäck, because the education in mathematics she received at the institution when she studied there 2011-13 did not live up to academic standards on 4 out of 5 criteria set by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Swedish: Universitetskanslerämbetet, UKÄ) and consequently she demanded back her tuition fees which non-EU students pay in Sweden. The university contested her claim but the district court ruled in her favour.[4] The university lost again at the courts of appeal[5] but took the case up to the highest legal instance, the Supreme Court of Sweden, which also ruled in favour of the student after two years of litigation.
