{{short description|Utah vehicle license plates}}

The U.S. state of Utah first required its residents to register their motor vehicles in 1909. Registrants provided their own license plates for display until 1915, when the state began to issue plates.[1]

Plates are currently issued by the Utah State Tax Commission Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Passenger baseplates

1915 to 1967

In 1956, the United States, Canada and Mexico came to an agreement with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Automobile Manufacturers Association and the National Safety Council that standardized the size for license plates for vehicles (except those for motorcycles) at {{convert|6|in|cm}} in height by {{convert|12|in|cm}} in width, with standardized mounting holes.[2] The 1954 (dated 1955) issue was the first Utah license plate that complied with these standards.
