The U.S. federal district of the District of Columbia first required its residents to register their motor vehicles in 1903. Registrants provided their own license plates for display until 1907, when the district began to issue plates.[1]
Front and rear plates are required on all vehicles in the District of Columbia except for motorcycles.
In 1956, the United States, Canada and Mexico came to an agreement with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Automobile Manufacturers Association and the National Safety Council that standardized the size for license plates for vehicles (except those for motorcycles) at {{convert|6|in|cm}} in height by {{convert|12|in|cm}} in width, with standardized mounting holes.[2] The first District of Columbia license plate that complied with these standards was issued three years beforehand, in 1953 (dated March 31, 1954).
