It covers an area of {{convert|4.25|km2|sqmi}}, and has a population of 1,407 (as at 28 August 2006). Vidnava/Weidenau was, for many prisoners of war, a stopping place on 'The Long March' during the final months of the Second World War in Europe. About 30,000 Allied PoWs were force-marched westward across Poland, Czechoslovakia and Germany in appalling winter conditions, lasting about four months from January to April 1945.[1] Vidnava lies approximately {{convert|16|km|mi|0}} north of Jeseník, {{convert|87|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} north of Olomouc, and {{convert|200|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} east of Prague.
