Singh (Hindi: विनोद कुमार सिंह) was born on 9 September 1959,in Kshatriya family in Anantpur, a village in district Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. He is the founding director of IISER Bhopal,[2] on lien from IIT Kanpur. He set up the whole campus of 200 acres land from scratch during his period. He was a member of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India (SAC-PM). He is fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. Singh's major research contributions[3] are in the areas of enantioselective reactions and total synthesis. His group has designed and developed several new chiral ligands and has achieved total synthesis of natural products using chiron approach. EducationSingh had his early education from a primary school in his village area. He passed high school and intermediate from Wesley Inter College and B.Sc. from D. A. V College, both in Azamgarh. He did M.Sc. (Chemistry) from B.H.U [4] in 1980, he joined Malt-Chem Research Center Nandesari, Baroda, where he earned a Ph.D. degree in 1986 under the supervision of Dr. Sukh Dev. He spent two years (1985–1986) in Canada where he worked with Professor M.H. Benn (University of Calgary) and Professor J.P. Kutney (University of British Columbia). He moved to Professor E.J. Corey’s[5] group at Harvard University, US, in early 1987 and worked there for 3 years as a post-doctoral fellow. ProfessionSingh started his career as a senior scientist in Neurogen Corporation, Connecticut, US, in March 1990. In the mean time, he accepted an offer for a faculty position from IIT Kanpur[6] and joined the Institute in December 1990 as an assistant professor in Chemistry. He was promoted to associate professor in 1997 and professor in 2001. He came from IIT Kanpur to start IISERB (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal) in the year 2008 and currently he is working as the Director of IISER Bhopal.[7] He served as a Director/Mentor Director, in Institutes such as School of Planning and Architecture SPA Bhopal,[8] IISER Berhampur, MANIT Bhopal, and IIIT Bhopal.
