The first was a wooden bridge built in 1860 by Charles W. Fuller and was hence called Fuller's Crossing.[3][9] After it was destroyed by a flood, a second bridge, a toll bridge, was built and sold to Myron Lake in 1861, although in 1867 it was also destroyed by a flood.[7] Even though it was replaced by yet another bridge, it became unneeded after the arrival of the Transcontinental Railroad.[7] In 1877, the Washoe County authorized the creation of a new tied-arch bridge made of iron.[3] In 1905, the iron bridge was moved and the current bridge, designed by San Francisco architect John B. Leonard, was built by Cotton Brothers and Company of Oakland, California.[8] LegendLegend has it that newly divorced women would, after exiting the Washoe County Courthouse, stand on the Virginia Street Bridge and cast their wedding rings into the Truckee River below.[3] Hence, the bridge became known as the main symbol of Reno, which was called the "Divorce Capital of the World" beginning in 1906.[2] Over the years, salvage divers have found actual rings, according to archivist Guy Rocha.[3] In the 1961 film The Misfits, Marilyn Monroe considers tossing her wedding ring from the Virginia Street Bridge, but decides against it.[3] References1. ^{{cite web|url={{NRHP url|id=80002471}} |title=Inventory Nomination Form|date=10 December 1980|work=National Register of Historic Places|publisher=National Park Service|accessdate=21 October 2010}} 2. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Virginia Street Bridge|url=http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/nevada/vir.htm|publisher=National Park Service|accessdate=17 October 2010}} 3. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{cite web|last=Bledsoe|first=Bruce|title=Virginia Street Bridge|url=http://www.onlinenevada.org/virginia_street_bridge|work=The Online Nevada Encyclopedia|accessdate=17 October 2010|date=19 March 2009}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=The Eleven Most Endangered Historic Places in Nevada|url=http://preservenevada.unlv.edu/endangered_sites.html|publisher=Preserve Nevada|accessdate=19 October 2010|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101231000300/http://preservenevada.unlv.edu/endangered_sites.html|archive-date=31 December 2010|dead-url=yes|df=dmy-all}} 5. ^{{cite web|last1=DeLong|first1=Jeff|title=Work to start on 'crumbling' Virginia Street Bridge|url=http://www.rgj.com/story/news/2014/12/24/work-start-crumbling-virginia-street-bridge/20872229/|website=Reno Gazette-Journal|accessdate=25 December 2014}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Street Bridge Project|url=http://vsbreno.com/|website=http://vsbreno.com/|accessdate=7 January 2015}} 7. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Virginia Street Bridge|url=http://www.reno.gov/Index.aspx?page=1572|publisher=City of Reno|accessdate=17 October 2010|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101230022901/http://reno.gov/Index.aspx?page=1572|archive-date=30 December 2010|dead-url=yes|df=dmy-all}} 8. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Street Bridge — Reno, Washoe County|url=http://www.scenicnevada.org/last/bridge.html|publisher=Scenic Nevada|accessdate=17 October 2010}} External links{{Commons category|Virginia Street Bridge (Reno, Nevada)|Virginia Street Bridge (Reno, Nevada)|position=left}}{{Nevada State Historic Places/Washoe County}} 10 : Road bridges in Nevada|Buildings and structures in Reno, Nevada|Transportation in Reno, Nevada|Bridges completed in 1905|Road bridges on the National Register of Historic Places in Nevada|National Register of Historic Places in Reno, Nevada|Former toll bridges in Nevada|Historic American Engineering Record in Nevada|Concrete bridges in the United States|Arch bridges in the United States |
