It was merged to the city of Lahti on 1 January 2016. It is located in the province of Southern Finland and is part of the Päijät-Häme region. The municipality had a population of {{formatnum: 14905}} ({{date|2015-06-30}})[2] and covered an area of {{convert|382.86|km2|abbr=on}} of which {{convert|38.67|km2|abbr=on}} was water.[1] The population density was {{pop density|14905|324.19|km2|sqmi}}. Nastola is located between two major cities: Lahti and Kouvola. The municipality was unilingually Finnish.
