The Vâlcan Mountains are a chain of mountains in the southern Carpathians in Romania. They are part of the Retezat-Godeanu Mountains group. They run for approximately 54 km (34 mi) and the highest peak is 1946 m (6384 ft) high.[1] The mountains run the length of the Jiu Valley, and serve as a barrier to entry on the southern side of the valley.[2] References1. ^{{cite book|last=Roberts|first=James|title=The Mountains of Romania|publisher=Cicerone Guides|pages=126–127|chapter=8|isbn=1-85284-295-4 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=b35z4pJSOEYC&pg=PA127&lpg=PA127&dq=V%C3%A2lcan+Mountains&source=web&ots=EU_inmFsME&sig=yPEEidyoAvJ9yFccy6WCeI1iy3w&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=8&ct=result|accessdate=2009-01-22}} 2. ^http://www.jiuvalley.com/engl/tourism/valcan.asp External links
