It was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Music Prize. The albums was dedicated to "absent friends – John Weller, Pat Foxton and Robert Kirby". It is the first of Weller's albums since 1982 to feature contributions from Bruce Foxton, formerly of The Jam. Weller told Mojo magazine: "We'd both lost loved ones and without getting too spiritual that was the spur of it. I spoke to him this time last year when his wife Pat was ill and that broke the ice, then I invited him down to Black Barn (studio). There was no big plan, it was easy, a laugh, and nice to see him and work together again. We just slipped back into it."[1] Track listDeluxe edition CD 1/standard editionAll songs written by Paul Weller and Simon Dine.

In Metro, John Lewis awarded the album 4 stars out of 5 and commented: "Since turning 50 two years ago, the Modfather seems to be making the most adventurous music of his career, astounding even the most Weller-phobic critics ... Most of the 16 tracks are short, sharp, clever and often wonderfully odd: check out bonkers music hall epic Trees, jazz waltz In Amsterdam or militaristic sound collage 7&3 Is The Strikers Name (an unlikely collaboration with My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields). Weller loyalists will be reassured by the copper-bottomed dad-rock staples, while Style Council fans will love Aim High, his finest blue-eyed soul ballad in ages."[9] References1. ^{{cite web | url = http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=18302 | title = She Speaks | publisher = Songfacts.com | accessdate = 12 April 2010}} {{Paul Weller}}2. ^{{cite web|title=Reviews and Tracks for Wake Up The Nation by Paul Weller|url=http://www.metacritic.com/music/wake-up-the-nation/paul-weller|publisher=Metacritic|accessdate=24 September 2017}} 3. ^{{cite web |first=Stephen Thomas |last=Erlewine |title=Review: Wake up the Nation |url={{Allmusic|class=album|id=r1730695|pure_url=yes}} |publisher=AllMusic |accessdate=9 May 2010}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/mf6m |title=BBC review}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.slantmagazine.com/music/review/paul-weller-wake-up-the-nation/2092 |title=Slant Magazine review}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14219-wake-up-the-nation/|title=Paul Weller: Wake Up The Nation|first=Joshua|last=Klein|date=10 May 2010|accessdate=20 July 2010}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/album-paul-weller-wake-up-the-nation-island-1946188.html |title=The Independent Review | location=London | first=Andy | last=Gill | date=16 April 2010}} 8. ^{{cite magazine|first= Kenneth |last= Partridge |title= PAUL WELLER – Wake Up the Nation |magazine= M Music & Musicians |url= http://mmusicmag.com/m/2010/08/paul-weller-wake-up-the-nation/ |accessdate= 22 July 2016}} 9. ^John Lewis Metro, 19 April 2010. 3 : Paul Weller albums|2010 albums|Island Records albums |
