The village lies in the north of Ooststellingwerf. It is named after a pond 2 km to the west called Waskmar, which in turn means 'wash-lake' as it was used to wash sheep. FootballWaskemeer has a football team called Fuotbalferiening Waskemar. Its uniform is black and the shirt has a green horizontal band and white arm band.
