Located between Gisborne and Tolaga Bay, five kilometres southwest of Gable End Foreland and 2 km east of State Highway 35, it features prominently in the early history of the Ngāti Porou iwi.[1] Whangara was the location and setting for the successful New Zealand novel (by Witi Ihimaera) and film Whale Rider.[2] Whāngārā MaraeWhangara is the location of Whāngārā Marae, the meeting house of the Ngati Konohi[3] hapū.
