He named the house and estate St John's, after his victory in Newfoundland. The neighborhood of Ryde that surrounds the house is still known by that name.[8] He was appointed Adjutant-General to the Forces in 1778:[9] he died while serving in that role in 1781.[10] The point of St. John's Harbour that is adjacent to Signal Hill is named "Fort Amherst", in commemoration of his great victory at Signal Hill Notes1. ^Chartrand p.24. 2. ^{{cite web |last=Lundy |first=Darryl |url=http://www.thepeerage.com/p629.htm#i6283|title=A genealogical survey of the peerage of Britain as well as the royal families of Europe|accessdate=2008-05-07}}{{Unreliable source?|failed=y |date=February 2013}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url= http://www.thepeerage.com/p629.htm#i6283|title=Jeffrey Amherst|work=thepeerage.com|accessdate=1 December 2010}}{{Unreliable source?|failed=y |date=February 2013}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.geni.com/people/Lieutenant-General-William-Amherst/6000000012358063223|title=Lieutenant General William Amherst|website=geni_family_tree|language=en-US|access-date=2018-12-11}} 5. ^1 2 3 The Recapture of St. John's, Newfoundland in 1762 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.leighrayment.com/commons/Hcommons4.htm |title=Leigh Rayment's House of Commons pages|accessdate=2009-05-08}} 7. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.leighrayment.com/commons/Lcommons1.htm |title=Leigh Rayment's House of Commons pages|accessdate=2009-05-08}} 8. ^[https://archive.is/20120908112640/http://www.parksandgardens.ac.uk/index2.php?option=com_parksandgardens&task=site&id=6764&preview=1&Itemid= Parks and gardens UK, St John's House, (also known as Bishop Lovett Middle School), St John's Ryde, England] 9. ^{{London Gazette|issue=11937|page=1|date=22 December 1778}} 10. ^Light Infantry{{dead link|date=January 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} References
