Norton (year of birth unknown – 1895) was an American college football coach. He attended Dartmouth College, where he competed in track and field,[1] baseball, and earned varsity letters in football in 1889 and 1890.[2] In 1890, The New York Times wrote of Norton: "it is safe to say there will not be a better second baseman in the Triangular League. He batted fairly well last year, and has improved much since the first championship game last Spring."[2] He graduated from Dartmouth in 1890,[3] and then attended Yale Law School.[5] In 1894, Norton coached the Brown University football team and amassed a record of 10–5.[4] In November 1894, Norton left Providence, Rhode Island for Florida. His burnt body was discovered on February 3, 1895 in a cabin on the Indian River, an apparent victim of murder.[5] Head coaching record{{CFB Yearly Record Start | type = coach | team = | conf = | bowl = | poll = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subhead| name = Brown Bears | conf = Independent | startyear = 1894 | endyear = single }}{{CFB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | year = 1894 | name = Brown | overall = 10–5 | conference = | confstanding = | bowlname = | bowloutcome = | bcsbowl = | ranking = no | ranking2 = no }}{{CFB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Brown | overall = 10–5 | confrecord = }}{{CFB Yearly Record End | overall = 10–5 | bowls = no | poll = no | polltype = | legend = no }} References1. ^[https://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9F04E7D81F38E033A25757C0A9669D94699FD7CF DARTMOUTH COLLEGE GAMES], The New York Times, October 3, 1888. {{Brown Bears football coach navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Norton, William G}}{{1890s-collegefootball-coach-stub}}2. ^[https://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9801EFD6143BE533A25755C1A9649C94619ED7CF DARTMOUTH COLLEGE], The New York Times, February 16, 1890. 3. ^1 2009 Dartmouth Football Media Guide, p. 118, Dartmouth College, 2009. 4. ^All-Time Coaching Records by Year, College Football Data Warehouse, retrieved July 7, 2010. 5. ^1 [https://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/boston/access/570116252.html?dids=570116252:570116252&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:AI&date=Feb+05%2C+1895&author=&pub=Boston+Daily+Globe&desc=COLLEGE+ATHLETE+SLAIN&pqatl=google COLLEGE ATHLETE SLAIN; Seeming Murder in Florida of William Norton.
