It was designated as a Michigan Historic Site and added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1986.[1][3] HistoryThis house is locally important as the former home of William Hayden.[3] William Hayden was born in Otsego County, New York, and in 1851 moved to Jackson, Michigan and purchased a mill there. In 1856, he married Sara M. Hosner,[2] and in 1857 the couple moved to Tecumseh and purchased the Globe Flour Mill. Under Hayden's ownership, the mill became one of Tecumseh's leading commercial businesses in the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1860, Hayden constructed this house. In 1882 Hayden purchased a factory to manufacture his own barrels.[3] William Hayden died in 1897.[2] DescriptionThe house is a two-story, red brick villa built in Italianate architecture. While his house was typical of other houses in the area at the time, the Hayden House is recognized for its elaborate detailing.[4] It has a cubical main section, and a slightly recessed wing extending to the side. Both sections have low pitched hip roofs, with widely projecting eaves supported by brackets. The main facade is five bays wide with one- and two-over-two windows having arched and winged caps. The front porch is a large bracketed stoop, and a smaller porch extends to one west side.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://nrhp.focus.nps.gov/|title=National Register Information System|date=July 28, 2010|work=National Register of Historic Places|publisher=National Park Service}} {{National Register of Historic Places listings in Lenawee County, Michigan}}{{National Register of Historic Places}}2. ^1 {{citation | title = Historical Collections | volume = 28 | author = Michigan State Historical Society | date = 1900 |pages = 71-72 | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=cRwzAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA71#v=onepage&q&f=false}} 3. ^1 {{citation | title = National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination Form: William Hayden House | url = https://catalog.archives.gov/id/25338270}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web|last=State of Michigan|url=http://www.mcgi.state.mi.us/hso/sites/8776.htm|date=2009|title=Hayden, William, House |accessdate=July 29, 2010}} 8 : Houses in Lenawee County, Michigan|Michigan State Historic Sites|Italianate architecture in Michigan|Houses completed in 1862|Houses on the National Register of Historic Places in Michigan|1862 establishments in Michigan|National Register of Historic Places in Lenawee County, Michigan|Tecumseh, Michigan |
