Sir William Lane Booker, CMG, FRGS[1] (12 July 1824[2] – 19 February 1905)[3] was a British diplomat stationed in the United States. Booker was the son of Thomas Booker and his wife Rhoda, and was baptised at St Botolph's Aldgate on 23 July 1824.[2] Between 1844 and 1848, Booker travelled in Asia, Southern Europe, the United States and Canada.[4] Attracted by Colonel Mason's report on the discovery of gold in California, he left England on 17 January 1849 for Chagres, then the chief Atlantic port on the Isthmus of Panama.[4] After a three-week wait in Panama City, he then travelled north on board a clipper to San Francisco, arriving at the end of June 1849.[4] Booker then spent a year at the mines on the Yuba River and Butte Creek.[4] Failing to make his fortune, he returned to San Francisco and worked for English insurance and mining companies for several years.[4] On the formation of the British consulate in the city, in the spring of 1851, he began work there as a secretary.[4] In 1856 he became Acting Consul for California, and on the retirement of George Aiken in 1857, became full Consul.[4][5] In 1871 the consulate was expanded to include Oregon and Washington, retaining its headquarters in San Francisco.[6] On 22 September 1881, he married Elizabeth French Bispham née Page, daughter of Gilbert Page of Morristown, New Jersey.[4][7] On the retirement of Sir Edward Archibald, Booker was appointed Consul-General for New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Connecticut (with the headquarters at New York City) on 1 January 1883.[4][8] The consulate was later expanded to include Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Dakota, Wyoming and Utah, with effect from the same date, and reduced to include the original states in 1886.[9][10] On 6 August 1886, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) and was made a Knight Bachelor by letters patent in 1894 before retiring and returning to England in July that year.[4][11][12][13] References1. ^Colonial Correspondence, Booker, William Lane {{start box}}{{s-dip}}{{succession box | title=British Consul for California2. ^1 International Genealogical Index, Batch No. C006339, Dates, 1821-1835, Source Call Nos. 0380133/4, Printout Call No. 6901255 3. ^{{London Gazette|issue=27782|date=7 April 1905|page=2663}} 4. ^1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 [https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1894/07/01/106910469.pdf The New York Times, 1 July 1894] 5. ^{{London Gazette|issue=22003|date=19 May 1857|page=1770}} 6. ^{{London Gazette|issue=23705|date=10 February 1871|page=486}} 7. ^RootsWeb, 'Elizabeth French PAGE, I131 8. ^{{London Gazette|issue=25191|date=23 January 1883|page=376}} 9. ^{{London Gazette|issue=25210|date=9 March 1883|page=1322}} 10. ^{{London Gazette|issue=25605|date=6 July 1886|page=3276}} 11. ^{{London Gazette|issue=25614|date=6 August 1886|page=3793}} 12. ^{{London Gazette|issue=26494|date=13 March 1894|page=1523}} 13. ^[https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1894/01/16/104156249.pdf The New York Times, 16 January 1894] (acting 1856-7) | before=George Aiken | after=Consulate expanded | years=1857–1871}}{{succession box | title=British Consul for California, Oregon and Washington | before=Consulate expanded | after=George Stanley | years=1871–1883}}{{succession box | title=British Consul-General for New York et al. | before=Sir Edward Archibald | after=Gilbert Fraser (acting) | years=1883–1894}}{{end box}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Booker, William Lane}} 6 : 1824 births|1905 deaths|British diplomats|Companions of the Order of St Michael and St George|Fellows of the Royal Geographical Society|Knights Bachelor |
