William V was Count of Nevers and Auxerre from 1176 through 1181.{{sfn|Bouchard|1987|p=349}} His parents were Guy of Nevers and Mathilda of Grignon.{{sfn|Bouchard|1987|p=348}}

Following his father's death in 1176, his mother, Mathilda, was regent during his lifetime.{{sfn|Bouchard|1987|p=349}} He died as a child in 1181.{{sfn|Bouchard|1987|p=349}} William's sister, Agnes would become heiress of Nevers.{{sfn|Bouchard|1987|p=349}}
