Emanuel Lasker defended the World Chess Championship for the first time in Moscow between November 6, 1896, and January 14, 1897. He faced William Steinitz, former World Champion whose title Lasker had taken in 1894. Lasker won by a score of +10 -2 =5, thus retaining his title.

Results

The match was a re-match from the 1894 championship (see Game Collection: 1894 World Chess Championship).

The first player to win ten games would be champion.
