Zubairi, or Zuberi ({{lang-ar| زبيري }}), is a family name in South Asia and the Middle East. In Arabic, Zubair means Superior.

Some Zuberi's also lived in Aligharh and later on migrated to Pakistani cities after the Indo-Pak separation.

History

The Zuberi family has a history traceable to Zubayr ibn al-Awam. He was buried near Basra, Iraq. This town was named Al-Zubair.

After almost 50 years of the conquest of Sindh by Muhammad ibn Qasim, Zuberis started migrating from Mecca and Medina towards Sindh. Most of them settled near modern-day Dadu, Pakistan. By the end of 4th century AH Zuberis started migrating from Sindh to Multan. During 14th century AD, a part of the Zuberi clan migrated to Delhi. The Sufi Samauddin Zuberi led this migration.

Afterwards the Zuberi family settled in Lahore, Panipat, Delhi and Sumbal. Under Mughal Emperor Akbar, Zuberis also settled in Meerut, where they were commonly known as the ruling Nawabs of Meerut. Marehra and Shaswan also became centre of the family activities in 15th century AD. In Marehra, Kamboh Mohallah (not to be confused with the kamboh caste) had the largest concentration of Zuberis. Around 100 houses in Marehra were then owned by Zuberis.

During the post-Indo-Pakistani Partition period, most of the Zuberis migrated from India to Pakistan and settled in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi. Currently, Zuberis can be found frequently in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Saudi Arabia, Arab states of the Persian Gulf, the United Kingdom and the United States. Since 1976, the family has been organized in the Zuberi Association.[1]
