Voters chose thirty-six representatives, or electors to the Electoral College, who voted for President and Vice President. New York voted for the Whig candidate, Zachary Taylor, over Free Soil candidate Martin van Buren and Democratic candidate Lewis Cass. Taylor won New York by a margin of 21.51 percent over Van Buren.
