Incumbent Governor Andrew E. Lee ran on the Fusion Party ticket (as opposed to the People's Party ticket, on which he had won in 1896) and was re-elected, defeating Republican nominee Kirk G. Phillips and Prohibition Party candidate Knute Lewis. Lee won by 370 votes or 0.54%, the second-smallest margin in South Dakota gubernatorial election history (beaten only by Lee's election in 1896, which he won by 319 votes or 0.39%).[1] As with the previous election, the Prohibitionist candidate polled lowly but polled enough that if their votes went either way, the race would have been changed.
