The Bulldogs finished with a 9–2 record under second-year head coach Frank Butterworth. The team recorded seven shutouts and won its first nine games by a combined 146 to 11 score. It then lost its final two games against rivals Princeton (6–0) and Harvard (17–0).[1] Three Yale players, halfback Malcolm McBride and guards Burr Chamberlain and Gordon Brown, were consensus picks for the 1898 College Football All-America Team.[2] Schedule{{CFB schedule|attend=yes |source=yes |September 24|at|{{cfb link|year=1898|team=Trinity Bantams|title=Trinity}}| |Hartford, CT|W 18–0| |[3] |October 1| |{{cfb link|year=1898|team=Wesleyan Methodists|title=Wesleyan}}|Yale Field|New Haven, CT|W 5–0| |[4] |October 5| |{{cfb link|year=1898|team=Amherst Lord Jeffs|title=Amherst}}|Yale Field|New Haven, CT|W 34–0| |[5] |October 8| |{{cfb link|year=1898|team=Williams Ephs|title=Williams}}|Yale Field|New Haven, CT|W 23–0| |[6] |October 15|at| Newton Athletic Ass'n| |Newton, MA|W 6–0| |[7] |October 19| |Brown |Yale Field|New Haven, CT|W 22–6| |[8] |October 22| |Carlisle|Yale Field|New Haven, CT|W 18–5| |[9] |October 29|at|Army| |West Point, NY|W 10–0|5,000|[10] |November 5| |Chicago Athletic Ass'n|Yale Field|New Haven, CT|W 10–0| |[11] |November 12|at|Princeton (rivalry)|Brokaw Field|Princeton, NJ|L 0–6|16,500|[12] |November 19| |Harvard (rivalry)| |New Haven, CT|L 0–17|17,500|[13] }} References1. ^{{cite web|title=1898 Yale Bulldogs Schedule and Results|publisher=Sports Reference LLC|work=SR/College Football|accessdate=February 27, 2017|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/yale/1898-schedule.html}} {{Yale Bulldogs football navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:1898 Yale Bulldogs Football Team}}2. ^{{cite web|title=Award Winners|publisher=NCAA|year=2012|pages=2–4|url=http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2012/Awards.pdf}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=Yale's First Game: The New Have Collegians Defeat Trinity 18 to 0|newspaper=The Times (Philadelphia)|date=September 25, 1898|page=9|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16360300/yales_first_game/|via=Newspapers.com}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Yale's Small Score|newspaper=The Times (Philadelphia)|date=October 2, 1898|page=9|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16360206/yales_small_score/|via=Newspapers.com}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Yale Plays Fiercely: Puts Up a Game That Greatly Pleases Her Supporters|newspaper=The Philadelphia Inquirer|date=October 6, 1898|page=4|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16360128/yale_plays_fiercely/|via=Newspapers.com}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=Yale Makes Twenty-Three: And Is Nearly Scored on in the Last Half by Williams|newspaper=The Philadelphia Inquirer|date=October 9, 1898|page=14|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16360030/yale_makes_twentythree_and_is_nearly/|via=Newspapers.com}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=Narrow Escape: Yale Defeated the Newton A.A.
