VacancyThe by-election was held due to the death of the incumbent Liberal MP, Charles Palmer.[1] Electoral historyAt the 1906 general election Palmer had had a straight fight with Labour; {{Election box begin ||title=General Election 1906: Jarrow }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Charles Palmer |votes = 8,047 |percentage = 61.2 |change = }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Representation Committee (1900) |candidate = Pete Curran |votes = 5,093 |percentage = 38.8 |change = }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 2,954 |percentage = 22.4 |change = }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = 13,140 |percentage = 77.2 |change = }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Liberal Party (UK) |swing = }}{{Election box end}} CandidatesThe sitting Liberal MP, the 84-year-old Sir Charles Palmer, had announced that he did not intend to stand for Parliament at the next election and the local Liberals had already selected Spencer Leigh Hughes as his replacement.[2] Hughes’ opportunity to get into Parliament came quickly as Sir Charles died on 4 June 1907 thus causing a by-election at which Hughes was adopted as Liberal candidate. Hughes faced, Labour, Conservative and Irish Parliamentary Party opponents.[3] Result{{Election box begin |title=Jarrow by-election, 1907}}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = Pete Curran |votes = 4,698 |percentage = 33.0 |change = -5.8 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Conservative Party (UK) |candidate = Patrick Rose-Innes |votes = 3,930 |percentage = 27.6 |change =n/a }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Spencer Leigh Hughes |votes = 3,474 |percentage = 24.4 |change = -36.8 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Irish Parliamentary Party |candidate = John O'Hanlon |votes = 2,122 |percentage = 14.9 |change =n/a }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 768 |percentage = 5.4 |change = -12.0 }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = 14,224 |percentage = 82.7 |change = +5.5 }}{{Election box gain with party link| |winner = Labour Party (UK) |loser = Liberal Party (UK) |swing = }}{{Election box end}} AftermathFor Curran, it was a short-lived triumph as he was unseated by another Liberal at the following General Election in January 1910. Rose-Innes did not stand for parliament again. In 1909 Hughes was the unsuccessful Liberal candidate at the Bermondsey by-election, 1909. The Irish Nationalists never again ran a candidate in Jarrow. {{Election box begin ||title=General Election January 1910: Jarrow[4] }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Godfrey Mark Palmer |votes = 4,885 |percentage = 34.0 |change = +9.4 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = Pete Curran |votes = 4,818 |percentage = 33.5 |change = +0.4 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Conservative Party (UK) |candidate = James Kirkley |votes = 4,668 |percentage = 32.5 |change = +4.9 }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 67 |percentage = 0.5 |change = }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = 14,371 |percentage = 78.6 |change = }}{{Election box gain with party link| |winner = Liberal Party (UK) |loser = Labour Party (UK) |swing = +4.5 }}{{Election box end}} External linksRegional Identities in North-East England, 1300-2000: https://books.google.com/books?id=OITlDsCSeMcC&printsec=frontcover&dq=Regional+Identities+in+North-East+England,+1300-2000&hl=en&sa=X&ei=uMVcU9OHCbDH7Aac8oDwBw&ved=0CDMQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false References1. ^http://www.leighrayment.com/commons.htm {{By-elections to the 28th UK Parliament}}2. ^The Times, 23 May 1907 p7 3. ^{{cite book |first=F.
